How does Nicrest Nicorandil 5 mg work?

Nicorandil opens ATP-sensitive channels in vascular smooth muscle cells. This causes efflux, resulting in membrane hyperpolarization, which closes voltage-gated calcium channels, leading to muscle relaxation and vasodilation.

Similar to nitrates, the nitrate component of nicorandil increases intracellular levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), inducing relaxation of smooth muscles, particularly in coronary arteries.
