Apixaban 5 mg is an oral anticoagulant belonging to the class of direct Factor Xa inhibitors. It is indicated for the prevention and management of thromboembolic disorders, where inappropriate clot formation within blood vessels can lead to serious cardiovascular complications. By helping to limit the formation and progression of blood clots, it supports the reduction of risks such as stroke and systemic embolism in appropriately selected patients.The product is commonly prescribed in individuals with non-valvular atrial fibrillation to help reduce the risk of stroke. It is also used in the treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), as well as in reducing the likelihood of recurrence of these conditions. In certain clinical situations, particularly following surgical interventions, it may be considered to reduce the risk of post-operative thromboembolic events.

How does Apixaban work? 

Apixaban exerts its anticoagulant effect through selective inhibition of Factor Xa, a key enzyme in the coagulation cascade. Factor Xa plays a central role in the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin, a critical step that ultimately leads to fibrin clot formation.By inhibiting Factor Xa, apixaban reduces thrombin generation and limits the formation of fibrin clots. This targeted mechanism supports smoother blood flow within the vasculature and helps reduce the progression of clot-related complications. Owing to its predictable pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profile, it provides a consistent anticoagulant effect, and routine coagulation monitoring is generally not required in most patients.
