Z-MET-50 (Metoprolol 50mg Tablet)

Metoprolol 50mg Tablet belongs to a selective beta-1 blocker that is used to treat chest pain (angina), high blood pressure, and heart failure. By lowering high blood pressure, it helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. This medication works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in the body (such as epinephrine) that affect the heart and blood vessels. By doing so, lowers the blood pressure, heart rate, and strain on the heart.

This medication should be taken by mouth as directed by the physician, usually once a day. One can take this medicine with or without food that depending on the prescription of the doctor. Crushing, or chewing sustained-release tablets is not recommended, swallow this medication as a whole.

Who Should Avoid Metoprolol 50mg Tablet?

Individuals suffering from serious heart problems (i.e., sick sinus syndrome, slow heart rate, heart block), severe circulation problems, severe heart failure, or a history of slow heartbeats that caused fainting should avoid the consumption of Metoprolol 50mg Tablet. 

Tell the Doctor If Ever Had:

  1. Asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sleep apnea, or other breathing disorder;
  2. Diabetes (taking Metoprolol Succinate ER may make it harder for you to tell when you have low blood sugar);
  3. Liver disease;
  4. Congestive heart failure;

Side-effects Caused by the Medication

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Common side effects may include:

  • Dizziness, tired feeling;
  • Depression, confusion, memory problems;
  • Nightmares, trouble sleeping;
  • Diarrhea; or
  • Mild itching or rash.

Call your doctor at once if you have:

  • Very slow heartbeats;
  • A light-headed feeling, like you, might pass out;
  • Shortness of breath (even with mild exertion), swelling, rapid weight gain; or
  • cold feeling in your hands and feet.

Precautions for Metoprolol 50mg Tablet

Before taking metoprolol, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other beta-blockers (such as atenolol, propranolol); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

  1. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: certain types of heart rhythm problems (such as a slow heartbeat, second- or third-degree atrioventricular block, sick sinus syndrome), breathing problems (such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema), liver disease, serious allergic reactions, including those needing treatment with epinephrine, blood circulation problems (such as Raynaud's disease, peripheral vascular disease), mental/mood disorders (such as depression), a certain muscle disease (myasthenia gravis).
  2. This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit or avoid alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis).
